The Byzantine reliquary cross preserved at Vatopedi Monastery is a small cast-brass work dated to the eleventh or twelfth century. Conceived as both a cross and a reliquary, it combines two closely related sacred images: the Crucified Christ and the Theotokos in supplication. Its compact form, suspension fitting, and articulated construction belong to a well-established family of Byzantine reliquary crosses. Byzantine Reliquary Cross: Form and Iconography
Across the broad arms and extended vertical shaft, the decoration is organized with marked axial clarity. The relief is shallow, the modelling compressed, and the figure occupies almost the entire available surface. On the visible face, the Theotokos stands frontally in a prayerful attitude. Her elongated body is defined by narrow vertical folds, while the enlarged upper area of the cross creates a restrained frame around the head and raised arms. Wear and the darkened surface soften many smaller details, yet the essential silhouette remains immediately legible.
Cast brass gives the object a direct material character. Without extensive surface ornament, emphasis falls on relief, metal, outline, the physical presence of the cross itself. Comparable Byzantine reliquary crosses in copper alloy survive across a broad medieval chronological range.
The pairing of the Crucifixion with the supplicant Theotokos condenses Passion imagery and intercessory representation into a single small object. At Vatopedi, this survival lets function, image, and physical construction be studied together, still bound within one Middle Byzantine work of metalwork.
