About Us

The Greek Encyclopedia, hosted at elpedia.gr, is an online reference work written primarily in Greek. It brings together entries on history, Greek and world art, mythology, Greek culture, the geography of Greece and technology, along with biographies of people who left their mark on the thought, the faith or the events of their time.

Subject areas

The material is organized into eight main sections, each with its own subdivisions:

  • History: from Antiquity and the Middle Ages with Byzantium to the modern and contemporary era.
  • Greek Art: ancient, Byzantine, post-Byzantine, modern and contemporary.
  • World Art: European art, with classical painting and the later movements, as well as the art of Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania.
  • Technology: artificial intelligence, telecommunications, computer science, devices and everything else that drives today’s world.
  • Geography of Greece: cities, villages and settlements, mountains, rivers, islands.
  • Greek Culture: folklore, music, customs and traditions.
  • Mythology: Greek, Roman and the mythologies of other peoples.
  • People and Biographies: historical figures, writers and philosophers, religious figures.

How the entries are written

Each entry aims to give the reader a clear and reliable first picture of its subject: what it is, when and where it appears, and what significance it acquired. Facts are checked, and the texts are revised and supplemented as the encyclopedia grows. The content is informational and educational in character; for specialized research, the academic literature and the primary sources remain indispensable.

In many languages

The Greek text is the original. Entries are gradually being translated into other languages, so that the material can reach readers outside Greece, the Greek diaspora and anyone interested in the Greek world who does not speak its language. Where a translation departs from the original, the Greek text applies.
